The story of ‘Ebu Gogo’ sounds more increasing. Based on local villagers, these creatures were around until about a century ago: three feet tall, furry, and speechless, though human language could be imitated by them, like chickens. The villagers tolerated them and also provided them, though they would just eat fresh food, until they stole and ate a baby. They drove them from their cave with raging bales of grass. Shortly thereafter, the villagers themselves moved off and western settlers came. The cave where the Ebu Gogo existed has not been found. But if it is – and experts are looking – it may produce some remarkable remains. These would not be technological. Possibly the saddest part of the whole story is the slow loss of engineering it means. Ebu Gogo appears to have been a descendent of Homo erectus, Java person man known as, who reached the area about 840,000 years back. It was most likely something that required ships, which seem a fairly human-level technology. But since Flores is so far from everywhere that only boat-users or very strong swimmers – like tigers – could reach it, the animals there appear to have shrunk to cope with the lack of food. The little hominids hunted a race of dwarf elephants, and ate for choice their children, whose charred bones have been present in the cave. So they really had fire once. They’d resources, too and possibly language. But their heads had reduced to a fraction of the size of mine. The Ebu Gogo recorded by the villagers had forgotten what language was for they used no methods, and ate their food fresh. At some period, possibly, their minds had reduced so much which they were no longer really human. The moral seems hard to avoid. What makes us human isn’t our moral characteristics.
